Summary: When a brother in arms threatens to die alone, loyalty to brotherhood in a legion keeps them alive. A drabble series written from the perspective of Mascius, Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus who are all reminded of true family and brotherhood as Titus Pullo meets his fate in the Gladiator arena.
Author Notes: Drabbled for the OSA Drabble Challenge #8: Brothers in arms.
The Thirteenth
He shall not die alone; nay, he should die amongst his brothers and be honoured as the hero he still is to us. Rumour of Pullo’s unfair trail passed swiftly amongst the veterans’ who already were unhappy by Caesar’s unfair treatment. Where once we fought as one to secure his empire, we now feel bereft of what should be rightfully ours. Instead, we became a legend in the children’s eyes or worse, given Pullo’s fate. Once we swore to stand next to each other, but that what once was seems forgotten, or bribed by the one who once led us.
The Footsoldier
I am a dead man; I knew this before even my so-called trial. Love lost, brutally murdered at my own hands, and I know that I lost respect of my brothers in arms, and why should they show it for one fallen so low? Friendship renounced while all I needed was a coin to drown my guilt. Yet, I will not allow them to stench you. Damnation shall be mine, but not to my brothers in arms! Thirteen! I chant. Where shortly I begged to die swiftly, I will avenge my legion, my brothers to reclaim honour by sword. Thirteen!
The Leader
Legio XIII Gemina, the famed Thirteenth: it is our home, and yes, our family too as of the day we fought together in Gaul and spilled blood. How could I think that I would arise above it, becoming a magistrate, being able to do good for our people? Tell me, Pullo, how could I have banned you so cruelly after you killed Eirene’s lover? Who was I to deny you the same comfort I enjoyed? Thirteen, you cry and I recall Mascius’ words: indeed, our honour is not for sale, our honour will not be soiled in this gladiator arena.
These drabble series is based solely on the Rome 1x11 episode ‘The Spoils’ where Titus Pullo faces his death in the Gladiator arena, but is rescued by his brother in arms.
Mascius words to Vorenus about the offer to locate the veterans of Legio XIII Gemina in Germany:
I have been true to my brothers since I first spilt blood...my honor is not for sale so cheap.
